Ten Thousand Volunteer Hours Later…
The moment of my ten thousandth hour of volunteering at the Aquarium of the Pacific. I'm with Ollie. the orphan sea otter that I helped raise when she was just a pup.  | Pam Ryono

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 24

Back in 1998, instead of spending my day watching television or surfing the web, I decided that I would spend my Saturdays volunteering my time helping to take care of the critters at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Ten thousand volunteer hours later I’m still there.

My first volunteer hour was spent preparing the food for Brook and Charlie, two orphan sea otters that the aquarium had taken in. So it was kind of nice that my ten thousandth volunteer hour would be spent in a training session with Brook and Charlie and the other aquarium otters.

The last scene in the video was taken by my wife Pam during my ten thousandth hour of volunteering at the Aquarium of the Pacific. I’m with another sea otter near and dear to my heart, Ollie. Ollie is an otter I helped raise when she was a young orphan pup and I was her surrogate otter pop.

I think I made the right decision way back before the turn of the century on how to spend my Saturdays.

Ten Thousand Volunteer Hours Later…
Charlie and I share a moment together. It's nice that Brook and Charlie, the sea otters that I spent my first volunteer hour at the Aquarium of the Pacific preparing their meal for back in 1998, were with me during my 10,000th hour of volunteering.
