Hugh's Aquarium Views Video 11
If ever an animal’s name matched its personality it’s Harpo the sea lion. Harpo has a way of channeling his inner Marx Brother and stamping his own unique style to everything he does. Case in point is how he decided to use the selfie stick I made for the sea lions.
The selfie stick is an old target pole that was modified into a camera rig. The GoPro was placed on the end with the float to counteract the weight of the camera. The contraption was meant to be used with the sea lion holding the end without the float across the mouth as it swam. This is the way that Milo, Harpo’s exhibit mate, carried the sea lion selfie stick through the water and became an internet sensation.
Well Harpo decided to add his own style to carrying the rig. The first time I placed the pole in his mouth he took off initially like he was going to hold it like Milo. He then let it go and allowed it to float at the surface of the water so he could reposition it. He placed the float in his mouth with the pole sticking straight out and then proceeded to do his best Narwhal impression.
Fortunately the float was too large to be a hazard for him as he held it like a pacifier. I guess he just didn’t want to do it like Milo. So I reversed the camera and placed it on the other end of the pole so Harpo could take a selfie his way.
To make it easier for Harpo to position the float in his mouth instead of handing the selfie stick to him I added the step of throwing the pole like a javelin into the water so that he could swim under it to grasp it.
Check out the video as Harpo adds his inner Marx Brother style to using the sea lion selfie stick.
