I’ve known Charlie the sea otter since before the aquarium opened in 1998 when then mammologist and now current assistant curator Rob introduced the 1-year-old male otter and his female companion Brook to us before the Grand Opening of the Aquarium of the Pacific.

At 21 years of age, Charlie is the oldest male Southern sea otter around. He is a couple of months older than the oldest female Southern sea otter around, his exhibit mate Brook. Both were rescued as orphans in 1997.

I’ve always enjoyed working with Charlie as he is easy going and very intelligent. Despite his advanced age he still enjoys working with the staff during training sessions.

Check out the video of Charlie the senior sea otter.
