A to B is a basic behavior taught to our seals and sea lions to help aid in their care. An animal is taught to go from point A to point B using a target such as a fist or target pole as a reference point on where to go. Positive reinforcement such as fish is given as a reward for doing the task correctly. Cain the sea lion is currently being taught this behavior.
In the video Mammalogist Erin is on the beach as point A with Cain. Mammalogist Katie is across the water holding a target pole as point B. Erin sends Cain toward Katie (Point B). When Cain reaches point B he is rewarded. Katie then sends Cain back to point A. It’s a fun and important behavior for the sea lion to learn as it helps Cain understand where the staff would like him to be during a training or husbandry session.
