It has been a very eventful September so far with blue whales lunge feeding, fin whales racing around the boat, Risso’s dolphins sightings and breaches, more humpback whales, and so many sharks!

But What About the Dolphins?
The end of August has been pretty amazing with blue whale sightings every day! Along with the blue whales giving us great shows out there, minke whales and more humpbacks have been sighted too. These are baleen whales that have made themselves the stars of the shows, but what about the pre-show entertainment?

Hello whale fans! I am back and am so excited to report all the cetacean activity we have been having this summer! The Story of the Bryde’s Whales and the First Blue of the Season!
This is a whale we have never blogged about and it is an honor to do so! The name of these whales remind me that it is wedding season; Bryde’s, but don’t let the name confuse you. It is pronounced Brū-de or Brū-des whale. The reason I am mentioning them is because we just had two sightings, something super rare and I have never seen in the four years I have been here! ALSO, THE FIRST BLUE!

We have officially said goodbye to the grays as we transition into blue whale season, though we are still seeing a few cow/calf pairs heading north. Read on to see the final numbers and read about our humpback whale surprise!

Gray whale season is winding down but we had a pretty exciting April with around 36 cow/calf pairs of grays heading back up north so the females can eat again and wean their calves. Read on to see news on humpbacks, killer whales, dolphins, and a rare bird!

We have had some exciting trips out on the water with the small spring storms and more of the northbound gray whale migration! We have still been seeing many juveniles heading north, which makes sense since many of the whales without calves are the first to pass our coast.

While we spend a lot of time on the water in SoCal, we also like to travel to other places to see and learn about whales. Kera Mathes, our boat programs coordinator, and I recently took a long vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii, where I used to live. We spent ten days in Hilo and Kona looking for whales!
