The American Cetacean Society Brings us Good News! | Kera
The American Cetacean Society does an annual census of southbound and northbound gray whales off of Point Vicente and it’s official… the first gray whale has been spotted! According to the census, the whale was breaching as well. Hopefully that’s some kind of foreshadowing of what this year will look like.

An Early Showing for the Gray Whales This Season? | Kera
On November 20, 2010 we switched from our Dolphin and Sea Life Cruises to Gray Whale Watch. Although the major flux isn’t until usually until later in the season, the pregnant females are the first to head south and we could start seeing them at any time.

A Playful Minke Joins the Pod | Kera
A few weeks back we switched from Blue Whale Cruises to Dolphin and Sea Life Cruises and full of dolphins it has been! This is a time where we’re waiting for the gray whales to get here after the blues have left for the season. Although gray whales are still a few weeks out, there is still lots to see out there, including playful minke whales.

A Fin Whale Steals the Spotlight! | Kera
If you’ve been on a whale watch recently, you might have noticed that there are girls in Aquarium uniforms that are taking a lot of pictures. These are photo ID interns that are helping me with data collection so we can help our friends at Cascadia Research Collective to help protect whales. Luckily, they take a lot of photos, and this last Monday they caught some AMAZING pictures of a fin whale feeding!

A Weekend Whale Picnic | Kera
Krill is on the menu
Large groups of blue whales have been moving all around Southern California the last few weeks. At one point we had over 20 whales around the oil rigs. Although the group has moved around and spread out a little bit, there are still a ton of blue whales in the area. Just this past weekend we had a phenomenal day on the water where we got to see a great show of lunge feeding at the surface!

The Blues are Breaking the Record! | Kera
The last three weeks of whale watching have been some of the most intense I’ve ever seen here in Long Beach! We’re averaging about 15 whales a trip with a mixture of mostly blue whales and fin whales. In the three summers we’ve been doing this, it’s never been like this!

It’s a Blue Whale Party Out There | Kera
And there's a minke whale to crash the party
For the last few weeks we’ve been seeing blue whales galore! We’ve had as many as 12 whales in a single trip! Looks like along with the nice weather came the blue whales. And in addition to that, we’ve also seen a breaching minke, and possibly a hybrid blue-fin whale!
