We call these orcas Bigg’s or transient orcas. Bigg’s specialize only in eating marine mammals and don’t eat fish at all. The Bigg’s that we see here mostly hang out in Northern California, like Monterey Bay. That means that when we see them down here, they are looking for food.

Mostly we see orcas during the winter and spring, but every once in a while they show up at random times of the year. There have been a number of instances where the captains on the Harbor Breeze cruises hear from others that they have spotted orcas, but it’s just too far for us to try and get to that area.

Hello everyone! It’s been a great time out in our local waters this month so far. The ocean breeze is amazing when you want to get away from the inland heat. Our sightings for the past couple weeks have been pretty varied, we’ve seen a few blue whales, followed the same two humpbacks for days, and are welcoming our new set of whale ID interns.

The return of the pacific white-sided dolphin appears to have begun! The white sided dolphins we see follow temperature trends during their migration, either near shore to off shore, or north – south patterns.

On one of our recent whale watches our staff were able to observe a curious behavior from a blue whale spotted near the boat. At first glance it would appear to look like potential bubble net behavior.
