The “Finger”-Painting Octopus | Dominique

The “Finger”-Painting Octopus

Part 1

Many of you have seen the seals and sea lions painting as an enrichment activity. Some zoos and aquariums even have elephants, giraffes and rhinos paint. If these smart mammals can do it, why can’t our octopus, the smartest invertebrate at the Aquarium? We decided to give our giant Pacific octopus, Gunda, the chance to try.

Introducing Dominique

Enrichment Volunteer

I’m sure many of you, over your visits to the Aquarium, have noticed chew- toys in the otter exhibit, lorikeets picking at carved pumpkins or melons, discarded parts from a popular, potato-faced children’s toy outside the octopus’s cave, and the sea lions hopping on and jumping off floating rafts in their exhibit. These are all types of animal enrichment.
