SEA LION-CAM | Hugh
The times that I spent swimming around sea lions made me admire their grace and power as they glided through their liquid domain. I wondered what it would be like to propel oneself out of the water like they do during a porpoise or other maneuver so powerfully and efficiently below the surface. This curiosity recently led me to construct an underwater camera rig that one of the Aquarium’s sea lions could voluntarily hold during one of our pinniped presentations so that we could get a look at a sea lion’s point-of view of a session. This week’s blog features a video of the first test of my “Sea Lion-Cam”.

Spending Christmas with the Critters | Hugh
Even though the Aquarium of the Pacific was closed on Christmas Day there was a small cadre of husbandry folks spending part of their holiday taking care of the animals. For this volunteer it was a small way of giving back to the critters that have given him so much joy over the years.

HOLIDAY TREATS FOR THE OTTERS | Hugh
A snowy scene complete with a snowman. Curious eyes glancing from fur coats scanning the scene for presents left for them. Holiday Cheer filling the air as stockings are hung and colorful strings of lights glow. Tis the season for the sea otters of the Aquarium of the Pacific to enjoy the festivities of the “Holiday Treats For The Animals.

THERMOREGULATION | Hugh
When people feel cold they can put on a jacket. Sea lions, on the other hand, have a hard time finding a good tailor out in the ocean. So what can they do when they feel a chill? The answer is called thermoregulation. Recently our sea lion demonstrated their method of thermoregulation in the pinniped exhibit at the Aquarium of the Pacific.
