Hi! I’m Sara, an aviculturist at the Aquarium of the Pacific. What is an aviculturist? Well, it’s a very lucky person that gets to care for the bird collection at the Aquarium of the Pacific. I’m sure many of you, over your visits to the Aquarium, have noticed chew- toys in the otter exhibit, lorikeets picking at carved pumpkins or melons, discarded parts from a popular, potato-faced children’s toy outside the octopus’s cave, and the sea lions hopping on and jumping off floating rafts in their exhibit. These are all types of animal enrichment.
Fall in line and prepare to smile. The penguin chicks are on the march!

Training a shark to participate in its own husbandry care.
How do you get a nearly 8 foot long free swimming shark out of the water for a checkup? With a sea lion or sea otter the animal can be trained to get into a transport kennel when asked. Nicky, an Aquarium of the Pacific aquarist, decided to train Fern the Zebra Shark to willingly swim onto a transport stretcher using the same training techniques used to train marine mammals.

The Penguin love triangle that involved the fair maiden from Brazil, the old veteran from San Diego and the young stud from San Francisco has produced a couple of cute chicks. It has also produced a strange twist in the Penguin Soap Opera in the June Keyes Penguin Exhibit.
