It is not ‘no whale November’ folks, even though we are not in an official whale season; we are still seeing whales and having really exciting trips on our dolphin and sea life cruises! October was a great month for whale watching and we even spotted more than just whales, dolphins, and pinnipeds! We got some rare avian visitors who stayed in town for eight days straight! The masked boobies were stealing the show for many of our trips and bird enthusiasts came from miles to see these rarities. Read on to read about these birds and see some great photos!

The blue whale definitely took center stage this summer with their amazing displays of size and appetite, but what about their smaller cousins? The blues have continued to give us great trips with their surface lunge feeding but the fin whales and minkes have also been around feeding along with the blues on the krill! The end of August was full of excitement with more lunge feeding, krill at the surface and many familiar flukes! A part of our research on-board deals with identifying the different individuals of blues that visit us every year and we’ve had some whales come back to the area multiple times. So far, August has not disappointed as one of our best months to see blue whales! Not only are we seeing the blues but we are seeing them feeding on krill at the surface. This type of behavior is
called surface lunge feeding and it makes for a pretty memorable experience as a guest on board and even for us educators! Read on to hear more about our blue whale stories.

As I was leaving the exhibit after a recent pinniped presentation a little kid excitedly ran up to me just say “I like your seal the best!” The “seal” I was working with that day was Harpo the Sea Lion. This charismatic raspberry-blowing member of the species Zalophus californianus had made another fan!

We kicked off our July with spectacular whale sightings and it has only been getting better! We have been seeing at least three blue whales per trip and even fin whales and minkes as well! In the month of July we had NINTEY-FOUR blue whale sightings alone! Keep reading to find out more!
