The Aquarium of the Pacific’s behind-the-scenes Green Team is helping staff members become more and more green through various activities that include such things as “Caught in the Act,” awards that go to people caught in the act of doing something to help save our planet—like using washable mugs for coffee—and a recycled art contest, both held in conjunction with April’s Earth Week.

It is one of the best kept secrets of Mother Nature. When you think of green sea turtles, visions of tropical islands comes to mind. To folks in the Los Angeles/ Orange County area of California, these warm water wanderers are thought to be in far off, exotic locales. And yet in an urban river near the Long Beach-Orange County border an improbable group of sea turtles inconspicuously resides.

Two San Diego artists are letting the Aquarium of the Pacific display an “urban tree” sculpture that they created in the hopes of getting people to realize the impact that humans have on the world ocean.

An adult blue whale can eat over 4 tons of krill per day and just like you and I after gorging ourselves on our favorite foods, a lot of what enters our body via the mouth, usually exits the body a bit further down.

That is one of those popular questions our guests ask several times a week, and I’m always happy to point them in the right direction! Two olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacae), Theo and Lou, reside in the Aquarium’s beautiful Tropical Pacific Gallery. Theo can often be seen cruising by our dive volunteers during the Tropical Reef Dive, while Lou can be frequently observed napping as you walk through the serene tropical tunnel. Helping out with the care of these magnificent creatures is one of the best parts of my aquarist volunteer days, so please read on to learn more about sea turtles!

A special focus for our tenth anniversary
As we embark on our 10th year as the Aquarium of the Pacific, we are looking at the world ocean and the problems it faces as global climate change continues to be exacerbated by human behavior. If we reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink how we live our daily lives, we can make a difference and help save our planet!

This June 20th is the tenth anniversary of the Grand Opening of the Aquarium of the Pacific back in 1998. However, this June 6th is my ten year anniversary of the day that I started volunteering at the Aquarium. To commemorate my anniversary day, this week’s blog is about my top ten Aquarium memories and experiences.

The staff at the Aquarium not only talks the talk when it comes to protecting Nature—-they also walk the walk and for a family of ducks, they were their Guardian Angels. This is the story of how three husbandry staffers helped a female Mallard and her eight ducklings make it through the urban jungle of Long Beach and safely to the water in the Aquarium of the Pacific’s version of MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS.
