That’s right! The blue whales have been sighted on several trips between the middle of November to the present! Our spontaneous and unpredictable blue whale season has made for a very interesting, and awe filled November! Lunge feeding blues, fins and mike whales have filled our waters on recent trips.

And the blogs too?
If you’ve been following the whale watching this summer and fall in Long Beach, you might have heard that the whales weren’t here like in previous years. Although it’s been a slower blue whale year, the dolphins sure have been keeping us entertained. Read on to find out what’s been going on.

Hugh's Field Notes from the San Gabriel River
Strolling down the river with a sea turtle. A falcon hunts egrets and grebes. Sea lions creatively foraging in the river. A look at some of my field notes from a summer of Green Sea Turtle research at the San Gabriel River.

This last month our blues have given us wonderful whale watching experiences! At this current time, they are not being seen as frequently off our coast in Long Beach, but they are still here in Southern California feeding.

This year has had a little bit of a slow start with the blue whales. Normally June is when they start to trickle in and by mid-July our sightings have increased. This year has been a little different. The blue whales moved around California before stopping off here in Long Beach, but now they’re here! And not just a couple! Read on to find out what our last week has been like.

Come learn about a local endangered species.
On August 8th my wife Pam and I will be part of a panel discussion at the Aquarium of the Pacific on a population of an endangered species that has chosen an improbable environmental niche in which to survive, the Green Sea Turtles of the San Gabriel River. Dan Lawson of NOAA, Pam and the Aquarium vet Lance Adams will talk about the recent research on these animals and the rehabilitation and tracking of stranded turtles. Many of my sea turtle images from the river will be used in the talks.

On June 15 we officially ended gray whale season and switched over to blue whale watching. That means longer trips and slightly different trip times. The switch to a longer trip has already started paying off as we’ve had a handful of blue whale sightings already!

And we’re just waiting on the blues to arrive too!
Three times a year I go through many applications trying to figure out how I’m going to decide which interns to bring on for out Photo ID internship. It’s no easy task and I can tell you there are MANY college students and graduates that truly care about the Earth. As I have to do each time, I’ve narrowed it down to four interns that have just joined the Aquarium team to help protect blue whales. Read on to meet the new interns and find out what their summer will look like!
