Lorikeet Forest was closed for a few weeks, so as soon I could, I made sure to get right back in there to see our colorful little friends and admire an exhibit upgrade that includes some new landscaping, a little remodeling of the shaded area enclosure, and new fencing. It looks pretty spiffy! Watching the birds cavort around, as they interacted with our guests, brought me back to a few amusing moments that I’ve spent in this habitat.

Lola is a cockatoo. How do I know this? Because Lola told me that he was. When program keeper Melissa had the bird on her arm and asked Lola “What are you?” Lola replied “COCKTOO!” Lola is one of the many program animals that our staff takes around the aquarium to interact with guests.

For those of you who wonder what I actually do during my Saturday marine mammal shift at the Aquarium of the Pacific, this week’s blog is a rundown of my day.

Shark Lagoon’s touch pools have been “no touch” pools for the last few weeks. There has been medication in the water.

On June 23, 2000, an ecological disaster occurred when the ore carrier MV Treasure sank off the coast of South Africa between Dassen and Robben Islands near Cape Town which supported two of the largest colonies of the African Penguin (Spheniscus demerus) in the world. Tens of thousands of penguins were in danger of dying from the oil that was surrounding their breeding beaches. A cry went out worldwide to zoos and aquariums for assistance. They sought the expertise of these facilities to help deal with this disaster. The Aquarium of the Pacific responded to the call by sending their aviculturist Karen Anderson.
Two female and two male American Goldeneyes, (Bucephala clangula Americana) now in quarantine, are destined for the Shorebird Sanctuary ecosystem sometime in January 2008.

Through my blog, I met two of the nicest people, who came from Germany to visit Long Beach for two days before embarking on a cruise to Mexico and Puerto Rico. The day ended with a $20 donation to the Aquarium of the Pacific’s education department.

The Aquarium got a visit from some cool (literally) birds as I fed some bat rays and collected plankton straight from the ocean! This doesn’t happen much at all, so I was quite excited.

Well, that festive time of year is once again upon us! This time of year is always full of all kinds of celebration and fun, and the holiday season at the Aquarium is no exception. Decorations recently started popping up everywhere, and not just for us humans. Even the animals are getting in on the act!

Volunteers are involved in other things other than regular volunteering with shifts and events. They get a chance to go places and do things that they don’t get a chance to do while actually being at the Aquarium. Read about some of my experience and a hopeful soon-to-be one.
