Two San Diego artists are letting the Aquarium of the Pacific display an “urban tree” sculpture that they created in the hopes of getting people to realize the impact that humans have on the world ocean.

Coral reefs can be saved by reducing, reusing, recycling … and rethinking! | Josie
One of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s top ten ocean issues highlighted in its Tenth Anniversary Year theme of “Ocean on the Edge” involves the dying off, or bleaching, of the world’s coral reefs. Here’s a look at what is happening and some of the things we can do to help slow or even reverse the problem.

Party, party, party at the Aquarium of the Pacific | Josie
Parties are loads of fun, especially when they involve the Aquarium of the Pacific. The 10th Anniversary All-Staff Party was quite a shindig for volunteers and staff, and you can win an incredible Aquarium slumber party when you party like a sea star!

Ocean on the Edge | Josie
A special focus for our tenth anniversary
As we embark on our 10th year as the Aquarium of the Pacific, we are looking at the world ocean and the problems it faces as global climate change continues to be exacerbated by human behavior. If we reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink how we live our daily lives, we can make a difference and help save our planet!

It’s so nice to be appreciated! | Josie
Along with the national Volunteer Appreciation Week came lots of treats for those of us who give our time freely for no pay at the Aquarium of the Pacific. My, how it’s nice to be appreciated!

Teamwork between agencies makes port area safer | Josie
Thanks to our inter-departmental Emergency Operations Center-which works to ensure that we can handle emergencies to safeguard the well-being of our guests, staff, and animals-and the cooperation of area emergency response agencies, I feel quite safe here, at the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Chickens aren’t the only ones | Josie
I spent another day with the kindergarteners at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, with which the Aquarium of the Pacific has a partnership, helping Emily teach this month’s science lesson on eggs. We showed the children that chickens aren’t the only animals that lay eggs, and they were totally amazed when they saw how large a leatherback turtle grows, after being born from an egg that is roughly the size of a ping-pong ball.

Lorikeets are loads of colorful fun! | Josie
Lorikeet Forest was closed for a few weeks, so as soon I could, I made sure to get right back in there to see our colorful little friends and admire an exhibit upgrade that includes some new landscaping, a little remodeling of the shaded area enclosure, and new fencing. It looks pretty spiffy! Watching the birds cavort around, as they interacted with our guests, brought me back to a few amusing moments that I’ve spent in this habitat.

Sustainable Seafood Choices Are Best | Josie
Volunteers at the Aquarium of the Pacific learned a lot about sustainable seafood last week during one of our regular daily updates that provide us with all sorts of interesting information. Eating sustainable seafood is good for your health and the health of our planet.
