SEA LION-CAM

The times that I spent swimming around sea lions made me admire their grace and power as they glided through their liquid domain. I wondered what it would be like to propel oneself out of the water like they do during a porpoise or other maneuver so powerfully and efficiently below the surface. This curiosity recently led me to construct an underwater camera rig that one of the Aquarium’s sea lions could voluntarily hold during one of our pinniped presentations so that we could get a look at a sea lion’s point-of view of a session. This week’s blog features a video of the first test of my “Sea Lion-Cam”.

The Grays Are Officially Here!

In addition to the fins and a humpback

We have officially spotted our first gray whales for the season! They seem to be right on schedule, and hopefully they’ll keep on coming. There have also been a good number of fin whales, and even a humpback.

Spending Christmas with the Critters

Even though the Aquarium of the Pacific was closed on Christmas Day there was a small cadre of husbandry folks spending part of their holiday taking care of the animals. For this volunteer it was a small way of giving back to the critters that have given him so much joy over the years.

Fin Whales are Flying!

That's more rare than pigs flying!

I thought for sure I’d seen something spectacular when I saw a fin whale fluke this last year since they are a whale that is very shy with their tale. But on December 17, 2009, they decided to show me something even more amazing… a breaching show!
