Our new interns have all started and are doing an amazing job. We’ve had great sightings of dolphins, humpbacks, blue whales, fin whales, and even caught sight of a minke and an elephant seal! It’s been a while since our naturalists have been able to mention minke whales on the boats and years since the last time we could catalog an elephant seal sighting.

Hugh's Aquarium Views Number 31
Since 2008 when the Aquarium’s vet, Dr. Lance Adams, first introduced us to the sea turtles of the San Gabriel River, my wife Pam and I have been taking field notes and photos of these unexpected urban residents. The photos were used in a photo identification study project led by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The results were presented this year as a scientific poster at the International Sea Turtle Symposium, a gathering of sea turtle scientists and researchers from around the world.

Our sightings of gray whales have definitely been reduced over the last couple of weeks, only a few instances where we were able to see probably the last few cow/calf pairs heading north for their summer feeding. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go whale watching! We’ve seen lots of dolphins recently, even saw some Risso’s dolphins again.
