Back in 1998, instead of spending my day watching television or surfing the web, I decided that I would spend my Saturdays volunteering my time helping to take care of the critters at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Ten thousand volunteer hours later I’m still there.

Just like many of us, the penguins at the Aquarium of the Pacific receive annual physical exams to check their vitals and make sure they are in good health. Dr. Greg Scott, one of our veterinarians, shares a play-by-play of how a penguin physical is performed.

There have been a lot of great sightings of plenty of species, but it has especially been good for gray whale sightings. We even had the opportunity to see the rare Eastern Tropical Pacific pod of orca!

I first saw the mother otter with her newborn pup last summer in Monterey Bay. Five months later I ran into the same pair again at the same place in the bay.

Happy New Year whale friends! I hope everyone’s holidays were enjoyable. It certainly was a lot of fun on the water the last couple of weeks. Since I wrote the last blog we’ve seen orca, grays, fins, humpbacks, and lots of dolphins!
