While there is so much to enjoy about these magnificent creatures in our local waters, we have recently had the chance to witness lunge feeding from our fin whales. Lunge feeding behavior involves the whales feeding at the very surface of the water, gliding on their side with their jaw peeking out. Some researchers have hypothesized the coloration on fin whale jaws coincides with their ability to scare prey into more compact ‘bait balls’.

Everyone remembers their favorite teacher; the one who made learning fun and inspired you to be a passionate student. Hello everyone, I hope your holiday was enjoyable. It certainly was exciting on the water during Thanksgiving. We saw our first gray whale of the season on the 23rd and saw a very late blue whale on Thanksgiving Day! There has been a lot of diversity on our whale watches these past couple of weeks. There have been Risso’s, bottlenose, common dolphins, pacific white-sided dolphins, humpbacks, grays, 2 late blue whale sightings, fin whales, seals, and sea lions. Whew! That’s a lot of stuff.

Even though the air is getting cooler on the water, we’re still seeing plenty of life on our whale watches right now. There have been a number of humpback sightings (4 in one trip!) and we even got to see Scarlett again. If you have been keeping track of our blogs, Scarlett was seen a couple of months ago with a lot of red lice on their body.
