Sometimes our animals need a little extra love and care. Just like how we may need some cheering up when we’re sick, our recuperating animals appreciate some extra attention too. Enrichment is more than just for fun, it can also be used to benefit animals in recovery.

The Story of the Bryde’s Whales and the First Blue of the Season!
This is a whale we have never blogged about and it is an honor to do so! The name of these whales remind me that it is wedding season; Bryde’s, but don’t let the name confuse you. It is pronounced Brū-de or Brū-des whale. The reason I am mentioning them is because we just had two sightings, something super rare and I have never seen in the four years I have been here! ALSO, THE FIRST BLUE!

Not old enough to partake in breeding activities the penguin youngsters have been keeping themselves occupied by taking walks around the Aquarium of the Pacific. Check out the video of some of the places at the aquarium they’ve waddled into as they meet sea lions, seals, otters, trout, and guests.

The fish at the Aquarium enjoy enrichment, just like our other animals. And they can be quite good at the puzzle solving required by some enrichments, especially with the right motivation… food!

The Guam Micronesian Kingfisher
It sometimes gives me the chills when I see these beautiful birds during my Aquarium volunteer shift. The Guam Micronesian Kingfisher is extinct in the wild. When I look at them I feel like I’m seeing living ghosts.
