Stand-Out Moments Make Job Fun and Helping Children Is Rewarding

Helping children find the groups from which they have separated, answering questions, and seeing people enjoy new experiences are things that happen often at the Aquarium of the Pacific! Seeing those children reunited with the adults with whom they came is rewarding, answering those questions—sometimes the answers resolve bets—is rewarding, and seeing people experience new things make my job at the Aquarium worthwhile and loads of fun.

Training: Why Do We Train Our Marine Mammals?

Have you ever seen a sea lion speeding through the water like a torpedo and then doing a dynamic leap into the air?  A harbor seal gracefully twirling in her pool?  How about a sea otter coming up on deck and standing up on its rear flippers?  Chances are you have if you’ve observed any of our marine mammal training sessions here at the Aquarium.  Animals have always amazed me with their abilities and adaptations, and its always exciting to see them in action. However, it’s not all about fun and entertainment. Though entertainment and teaching the public about environmental conservation are extremely important, there are some other very important reasons we train our animals.  Reasons that directly benefit the animals themselves, and that’s what it’s all about.

Bonnethead Sharks

A New Addition to the Shark Lagoon Family!

We have a new addition to the Shark Lagoon family, a bonnethead shark. These sharks have a head shape similar to a hammerhead. It is so cute! Our newest addition is about 46 centimeters (18 inches) long on its way to a length of about 0.7-1 m (2.3-3.3 ft.). It is adjusting well to its new home and eating well on a diet of restaurant quality seafood.
