Watershed Management

No matter where you live, you depend on water and you live in a watershed. A watershed is the area of land where all the water that falls on it either percolates into the groundwater, evaporates, or drains off of the surface and flows to the same lower destination, such as San Pedro Bay. In California, coastal streams and rivers flow through the canyons and valleys of steep mountains, linking forest, chaparral, scrubland, grassland, and marsh on their way to the ocean.

Watershed management is the coordination and control of activities that affect a watershed's natural resources and water quality. It brings together services like flood protection, water conservation, preserving and creating open space for recreation and habitat, and reducing pollution of water resources.

The Aquarium’s new watershed exhibit and classroom, opening November 13, will give visitors the opportunity to learn more about our local watersheds and what we can each do to protect them.

As the Aquarium celebrates ten years, we want to educate people not only about the wonders of the ocean, but also the many ways it serves us and how we affect it. If we each take actions to be stewards of the ocean, collectively we can and will make a difference. Please visit our Ocean on the Edge gallery or attend the guest speaker series to learn more about the top ten issues facing our oceans.
