Ocean on the Edge

Top 10 Ocean Issues

As part of our 10th anniversary celebration, the Aquarium of the Pacific will highlight the top ten most important issues facing our ocean in the new exhibit and guest speaker series Ocean on the Edge. By introducing these important issues during our year-long anniversary, the Aquarium hopes to shed light on the challenges faced by the ocean, its inhabitants, and ultimately all of us who rely on our ocean planet.

At the Aquarium, you can see more than 550 species of animals that are found in the ocean. The wide range of marine mammals, fishes, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates in the ocean is beyond what most people think about on a day-to-day basis. But these animals and plants depend on the ocean every day. And so do we.

The ocean is a daily part of our lives, even on land… even if you are landlocked in the Midwest. We rely on the ocean for the oxygen we breathe, the fish we eat, the ocean adventures we have, and even for some of the medicine we take. And an ocean view can also bring us peace of mind. But we are leaving a legacy for the very ocean that we depend on and enjoy—one that is not ensuring a healthy ocean for the future. Just like our own health, we have to be concerned about the health of our planet, including the ocean. We can take care of it. There are some solutions, and as part of the Aquarium’s 10th anniversary, our Ocean on the Edge gallery will explore the issues and some of the ways of addressing them.
