Ocean on the Edge

Ocean on the Edge Exhibit

As part of its 10th anniversary celebration, the Aquarium of the Pacific will highlight the most important issues facing our ocean in the new exhibition Ocean on the Edge: Top 10 Ocean Issues.

The ocean covers nearly three-quarters of our planet and is a daily part of our lives no matter where we live. Without the ocean, life on our planet would not be possible. It regulates the Earth’s weather and climate, provides food and medicines, supports jobs and economies, and makes possible a variety of recreational opportunities. But human activities are taking a toll on the health of the ocean and jeopardizing this resource that both wildlife and humans depend on. The Aquarium’s new Ocean on the Edge gallery will explore the most pressing of these issues and ways the public can help.

The exhibit is broken down into the following educational areas: 1) One World Ocean, 2) Risk to Coastal Communities, 3) Shared Governance, 4) Energy from the Sea, 5) Ocean Trade, 6) Biodiversity Loss, 7) Food From the Sea, 8) Coral Reefs and Mangroves, 9) Ocean Pollution, and 10) Global Warming. The exhibit features murals, maps, 3D models, videos, stories, and interactive displays as well as animal exhibits on rays, jellies, coral reefs, and mangroves.

Aquarium Fun Facts

Our giant Pacific octopus’ favorite toy is a Mr. Potato Head, which is where we put her food. She systematically dismantles it, removing the eyes, ears, and all other parts, in her determination to reach the food inside. She will also remove the screw top lid from a glass jar to reach food inside.
